UPDATE 01/26/2016 – NEXT STEP ACTION NEEDED!

HB 2334 Passes Unanimously out of House Finance Committee!

Dear Martial Arts Members:

Congratulations! Our legislation HB 2334, that repeals the sales tax on martial arts, Prime Sponsored by Rep. Cindy Ryu, passed unanimously today with both Republican and Democrat votes a few minutes ago.

This is a huge deal but it’s only one of many steps before it actually reaches the floor for a vote.

Please contact Rep. Ryu (cindy.ryu@leg.wa.gov) and thank her for her support and hard work to pass our bill out of committee.

NEXT STEPS (you have to edit a few things!)

Contact Members of the House Rules Committee

The bill is now on its ways to the House Rules Committee and this committee decides if it should be put up for a vote on the House Floor. There are 24 members on the House Rules committee and their contact information is in the Files section of this Facebook Group and in this post.

Please contact them ASAP with this message.

“Dear Rep._______:

Could you please “pull” HB 2334 out of the House Rules Committee. This bill has no opposition and repeals a sales tax on martial arts that was passed in the 2015 session that all seem to consider an oversight. (In an effort to simplify taxation martial arts was treated differently than similar activities inherently instructional such as dance, gymnastics, ballet and other activities conducted in classrooms. This was not revealed in any Bill Summary or synopsis when it went through in 2014/2015 so almost nobody in the House/Senate was aware).

This new legislation, HB2334, will ensure that these very small Mom-and-Pop character building, culturally enriching businesses remain viable and prevent students dropping out or not enrolling because of the higher cost as well as job loss to instructors and businesses closing.

Again, please pull HB 2334 out of the House Rules Committee.

Thank you in advance.
